Re: New members, introduce yourself here!
Hi my name is Matthijs, 35 years old.
I've been trying to make games since the age of 10. I tried on a lot of different occasions, and it got me into programming.
Now I'm working as webdeveloper, with languages as Ruby, Elixir and Coffeescript.
Since a year I'm trying to make a game again, using HTML 5 technologies.
The goal is a SNES era like 2D sidescrolling shooter, playable with keyboard/gamepad. It should feel a bit nostalgic '80s style, but mixed with modern game design. I want the game to be directly playable in browsers. At the moment it is not playable on tablets/phones because I'm not sure what the best approach could be for touch controls. I'm also trying to make the game one seamless experience, without any loading screens, so each stage is going seamless into the next.
I try to do the whole development proces as open as possible, and most of it by myself.
I use http://craftyjs.com/ as framework for my development, all code of my project is Open Source and located here: https://github.com/matthijsgroen/game-play
I do all graphics myself, and use GIMP as drawing program.
I notice the problem I'm struggling with the most is game design. What makes the game fun? a lot of time it is tweaking numbers. I try to learn a lot from good gamasutra articles (about level design, enemy design, bossfight design) but most of them are not really focused on the Shmup genre.
I hope in joining this forum that I meet more people that could help test my game and give good advice/pointers ideas for game design!
You can find/play my game in progress here: http://speedlazer.net

Hi,
I'm passionate about game development since my childhood.
I grown in arcade room playing galaga, xevious, zaxxon and mainly gyrus (that I love so much
)
I was looking for a community to discuss my current project:
D.O.T : it's an arena shmup with a lot of different weapons.
I'd like to post a devlog but I've seen some of them in both Showcase and Development.
If i read the description correctly, I should post in Showcase. Am I right?

Re: New members, introduce yourself here!
Hello everyone! My name is Michael and I'm a complete noob developer. I'm a writer by trade and that doesn't lend itself too well to development so I'm trying to learn programming to bridge the gap. At the age of 36, it feels like my brain is cramping!
I've lurked here over the years but I think it's time that I actually stop hugging the shadows. Hope I can make some friends here who are also passionate about shmups. I love them. But I suck.
Nice to meet you all.
